The Adepta Sororitas are an interesting army these days. Still all metal models, largely out of production and digital only codex. You could say the barrier to entry for this force borders on the unplayable.
But a few vets (and no doubt some newbies!) persevere with this now all but unused army.
Me? Mines old school in terms of age – nearly all is 2nd edition 40k. I added a few newer models when the tanks and characters came out but mostly, this army is old. I have played with it against people at events where the army was older than them!
The Adepta Sororitas represent something of an unknown for most players and have changed significantly, rules wise, over the years – more so than many other armies. Like the Adeptus Astartes, bolters and power armour are standard but their stat line is more than human in most cases but less than trans-human.
The weapons they use form what was called – and I think still is – the holy trinity. The Bolter, the Flamer and the Melta Gun. It makes building the list pretty straight forward – if its not one of these things or a derivative of one, its basically not in the list!
Unlike what you might expect, the Adepta Sororitas don’t function like the Astartes on the table. Each has a unique once per game effect they can generate (per unit that is) called an act of faith – these could be gaining ignore cover, hatred, furious charge or any number of cool things. They are definitely a close quarters force thanks largely due to the nature of the weapon loads they carry but assault is for the most part not their thing. They have a couple of units like the Seraphim and Repentia that can perform in this role but its generally better to keep the enemy in that sweet 12″ kill zone.
But enough of this – onto some of the models from my army!
First up is my converted living saint. I never liked the floating cape and creepy cyber baby things so opted to take a seraphim jump pack, some spare 2nd ed swooping hawk wings and combine. I also used the sword army from the canoness kit rather than the standard one as the bare forearm really bothered me. Its also the only model I have ever painted which had both eyes closed!
My Canoness. Not much to say about her – she is built straight out of the pack with eviscerator and bolt pistol. She has won many a sterling fight in the past though I admit she is far more tame than the last time she saw the table in anger!
My rank and file sisters are up next. All told I have some 60ish sisters with various weapons. Thanks to them being a metal army, there are more than a few double up poses! Being only 2 parts in most cases made assembly easy but the repetition in painting was a pain! They are showing their age now – having been painted in 2007 with the release of the foundation paint set… yes I know, they had spent nearly a decade unpainted!
My lone Exorcist tank. Its an interesting tank for a few reasons. Firstly, its a metal hybrid kit – built onto a plastic rhino chassis. The side plates, front plate and all of the upper organ and crew section is metal. As such it weighs an absolute tonne! Second, being a metal hybrid, the kit was a huge paint to build. Nothing went together well and much green stuff was needed. Thirdly – it breaks the holy trinity of weapons by firing missiles! Every time a new codex comes out (which is few and far between!) I expect them to hurt my beloved Exorcist launcher but it remains d6 shots at S8 and Ap1 at 48″! Were it not such a paint to build when I got it I would likely have 3!
So what’s next for the army? Not much to be honest. I can’t match the colour scheme any more since all the colours have changed and I doubt I could remember the ones I used regardless! I am adding a battle conclave to the force of death cult assassins and a priest but they can afford to look a little different thanks to not being in power armour.
Its an army I really like to use from time to time and its far from competitive really but its nice to show up to a game and have genuine WOW! moments from my opponents when I take them out of the case. Lets hope they have the light of the emperor shine on them tomorrow!
Last September, I played a game with my sisters and allied Space Wolves. I had a squad of sisters repentia in a storm wolf with a priest attached and they got the charge off on Marneus Calgar who had split from this Assault Centurion body guard so they could charge two of my back line units. Calgar ruined what was left of my long fang squad, but was woefully unprepared for the eviscerators these ladies carried. Being completely, and illogically, anti-ultramarine (despite my love for loyalist legions), I have never been more giddy at a combat resolution.
So. Nice.
I love sisters as a whole, but they have been relegated to a hard “ally only” position. If the new FAQ rumors pan out to be true, alot of their functionality will be ruined thanks to the inability to deploy in other allies transports.
I sincerely hope they get a reasonable update soon. Especially with the Sisters of Silence coming out within the next year.
