Special thanks to Troupe Master Justin for these great pics of this army – we should say we got these pics back in the middle of the year but its taken me so long to get this sorted so apologies to Justin!
Greetings from the Webway!
I thoroughly enjoyed the WATC 40k event which was my first year attending.
I only recently returned to the 40k scene after departing playing 40k around 4th edition to complete studies and pursuit my career. Upon returning I dust off my 3rd edition dark eldar collection during 7th edition and started to recollect. Rather than commence immediately back into Dark Eldar I decided to invest time in start collecting a Space Marine army (Minotaur Chapter) in part because I feel in love with the Minotaur lore, I felt it would also provide lots of great opportunities to convert/customise, but mainly I felt the SM army would be best starting point to relearning the game that I loved many years ago that I played from 1st to 4th edition.
While building the SM army during 7th edition I was still continuing to collect the dark eldar and during this process thought during the re-release of the Harlequins that they would be a great complementary edition to the dark eldar force.
The original plan was to intend to a collect just a few Harlequins to be allies to the DE but as post 2 weeks after the Death Masque box set was released I managed to buy quite allot about 40-60% lower than standard sell from the UK. After a few great bargain purchases I had suddenly had a 2000pt Harlequin army.
By the time I got my SM army up and running the 2017 SHO was on the horizon and 8th edition replaced 7th edition. So I recommenced my 40k journey and tournament experience at SHO. Fun fact about SHO without any pre practice games I actually played my very first 8th edition game round 1 SHO against Matt Aird. (Now THATS a trial by fire as WA players will know! – ed)
A couple tournaments later I found it was a privileged to be a part of the Rainbow 6 team. Rainbow 6 was a diverse bunch of 40k enthusiast like myself but allot younger. I felt proud to have within our team one of only three girls that partook in this year’s WATC which was fantastic and I hope that we see plenty more women playing in future. Our team Captain Kyle was a great organiser and very adept at recognising his teammate’s skill. Overall I was impressed with all my fellow team members in how much effort they put in before and during the WATC.
Once I was comfortable with were my SM Minotaur’s army was at I then started painting the harlequins around the Christmas break. Unlike the SM Minotaur’s the Harlequins I left as standard mainly because the miniatures are quite beautiful GW kits.
The paint scheme I decided to go with “the Silent Shroud” colour scheme as a stark contrast to darker Dark Eldar colour scheme that I have gone for.
I took the Harlequins into WATC as a challenge into in trying to make a fluffy army be competitive. I personally think I achieved that by winning 3 of 4 games.
I mainly achieved the three victories by using speed to dominating effect to gain table control while using terrain cover and aura’s to protect my units. In particular the solitaire did some devastating attacks by charging from behind cover denying my opponents the ability to overwatch. Alongside the Silent Shroud stratagem – this left my defeated opponents somewhere between being feeling a state of confusion and astonishment, it was no surprise the one opponent that crushed my Harlequins was himself an experience Harlequins player. I guess you can’t trick a trickster!
