After digging out the Primarch of the 17th Legion, I recalled that I picked up a couple of Primarchs other than Angron and Lorgar… and I am on a roll with Forge World models right now – its totally not that I don’t want to build this chaos terrain!
So I cracked open the box!
Turns out he is far more complex than the lord of the 17th. All of the little pipes on the back of his armour are individual as are the censers which makes him a little fiddly.
I learnt from Lorgar and did the pistol on his hip first and then the arms and scythe went on nice and easy. I left the head off again for ease of painting. Where Lorgar was a breeze to work with, Mortarion had some serious mould slippage across every piece – and it needed some major work to clean up and I am still not 100% happy with the finish. It needs green stuff to sort out the gaps in the cape at the sides of the armour which is kinda frustrating.
The base was very easy and again, the fit was snug and only went together one way.
I know some of you will be asking why on earth I put them (Lorgar and Mortarion) together so completely before painting them. The main reason is that the capes don’t fit well in either case and the attachment of these after painting will probably do more harm than good. While it will make painting them a pain I consider this an acceptable problem so that the final finish is cleaner. Its not ideal but that’s the way it is. These are gaming pieces at the end of the day as well so the area under the cape is probably ok to leave in black – its shadows afterall!
I still have Fulgrim to build… maybe that’s the next project… though that Overlord Bastion is still sitting here…
