Deciphering Disciples of the Red Angel

Deciphering Disciples of the Red Angel – World Eaters

Disciples of the Red Angel

We have already seen a lot of questions online about this version of world eaters so I figured it was a good time to layout just how this works in the practical sense for matched play 40k games.

Lets start with the rules for the subfaction…

Disciples of the Red Angel (page 48 WE Codex)

Restrictions and benefits

Your army must include angron as the warlord

Your army can only include Khorne Daemons units and World Eaters Chaos Land Raider Units

Eight bound gain Obsec.

On the face of it its easy to make some mistakes. It’s the second restriction that catches people. Your army – not detachment – may only include Khorne Daemon units and WE land Raiders… this means you are limited to these units in the army as a whole and not that you can add daemons into the WE detachment. After all, plenty of units in the World Eaters codex have Khorne daemon keywords! Lets look…
Angron, Lord Invocatus, Lord on Juggernaut, Daemon Prince, Eight Bound, Exalted Eight bound,  Defiler, Mauler Fiend, Forge Fiend, Hell Drake, Lord of Skulls

So, you build a World Eaters Detachment from these units (easy in Elite slots or Heavy Slots for arks of omen matched play) and you can use the allied rules to include a legiones daemonica patrol detachment of khorne daemons.

I have seen plenty say this isn’t right – lets look at what makes a disciples of the red angel detachment…

Battleforged Rules (page 44 WE Codex)

A World Eaters Detachment is one that only includes models with the World Eaters Keyword (excluding models with the agents of chaos or unaligned keywords).

When mustering your army, if it includes one or more world eaters detachments, you must select one of the following sets of sub faction rules for your army to use for the duration of the battle – World Eaters or Disciples of the Red Angel

Do this means you have to follow this to even get the relics and stratagems as well as blood tithe… the Legiones daemonica units have to go in a separate detachment.

Daemons codex – Daemonic Allies (page 53 Daemons codex)

Daemonic Pact

If your army includes a Legiones Daemonica detachment and the combined power rating of all units in that detachment make up no more than 25%  of your army power level, then until the end of the battle, every unit in that detachment gains the agents of chaos keyword.

The inclusion of Legiones Daemonica agents of chaos khorne units in your army does not prevent world eaters units in your army from using rules that require every model in your army to have the same keyword

Following this you even keep blood tithe!

Blood Tithe (page 45 WE Codex)

If every unit in your army has the world eaters keyword excluding models with the agents of chaos or unaligned keywords you can gain blood tithe points over the course of the battle…

So where does that leave the World Eaters?

In either the standard World Eaters Legion detachment or the Disciples of the Red Angel Detachment, you can include an allied Khorne Legiones Daemonica detachment (with less than 25% power) and not lose anything for the 12th legion rules wise. You wont gain warp storm and you wont have blood tithe effect daemonica units but you will gain strats, relics etc.

Why use the red angel detachment then I hear you ask – different strats and relics mean you have a different feel on the table and objective secured eight bound units make the army feel very different indeed!

Disciples of the Red Angel

Here at Objective Secured, Lachlan is pushing forward with the Legion rules as his guide while I am on the daemonic side of the legion and want to run disciples. I would argue that the legion is more competitive than disciples but for me its hard to resist the call of all those eight bound!
