Episode 44: Cut to the Chase

Cut to the Chase

When you say ‘Cut to the Chase’ its certainly not a phrase you would say is one the team at ObSec do well! Ironically we kept this episode to about an hour and a half so maybe we can cut to the chase sometimes!

This episode sees us delve into the world of converting miniatures for organised play events and just what the criteria might be for ObSec events – which then might change when we have officially sanctioned support!

We take a look at some of the strict official formats from Privateer Press, Fantasy Flight Games and Games Workshop and then take a look at how ObSec differs when we have our own control for event format. Common sense is the order of the day here but it’s amazing how close the formats all line up. You can check out some of the variations in the SHO2019 players packs!

We also have to give a shout out to the Astartes series on youtube – if you haven’t seen it already you really need to check it out. Mike fanboy’d out over the last episode and it’s even worse with part 4. If you ever wanted to see how Adeptus Astartes might move and fight this is the series for you. Mike certainly didn’t get close while in cosplay!

Do you convert your models in anyway? What about scratch builds? How much conversion should count as converted? We would love to hear about your experiences – we want to hear from you!

Enough reading – go listen! Scroll to the bottom to stream it now or grab it from iTunes – Be sure to leave us a review on iTunes if you grab it there.

Thanks for listening!

  1. A bit late to the party here but I heard my name mentioned…

My keeper of secrets was actually used in 2 events – Autumn Skulls & an event at GW Joondalup I used a force of all 4 greater daemons!

I was also using an older Great Unclean One, alongside new Lord of Change and Bloodthirster.

The compromise I reached with the TOs of these events to keep using my mini greater daemons was to use a base adapter (great unclean one has gone from 60mm to 120mm!!), and that my opponents would always count as having LoS to the models (seeing as they are comparatively small now).

I think in the case of models being replaced by newer versions it is very important for TOs to have some way of allowing the old stuff to continue. Despite the Keeper of Secrets being 15ish years old now in absolute terms, someone could have gone to a store 3 months ago and got it new… It leaves a very sour taste when your $100+ model is banned…

Old models aside, I think the biggest point is that your opponent isn’t confused. I think we need to remember that as paramount, because I’m seeing from players and unfortunately GW a certain resistance to conversions. Which sucks because conversions and customisation was traditionally one of the biggest draws of the GW hobby compared to other games. Some of my favourite armies in Perth are Matt’s Star Wars guard and Troy’s squat guard, and I’d hate for rigid adherence to conversion rules to prevent us seeing those armies on the table in the future.
