Hobby Slump Break Out – Getting out of the Rut (a break from scenery for a night)

So tonight it turns out is a reprieve from building terrain. If you have had the chance to check out yesterdays post – you will see I was very much over building terrain… so much so that 2 separate friends (including the store manager who sold the kit to me) got in touch to see if it was really that bad. In a word YES. That gate kit was painful – 3 hours painful. When I say its one of the worst kits I have built, remember I have been building GW stuff for more than 2 decades and have build titans, super heavy tanks, metal dreadnaughts and thunder fire cannons – all the usual suspects – even a hell cannon in metal from years gone by.

So as you can imagine, I was not exactly enthusiastic about tonight’s project…

Overlord Bastion 1

Yay… not!

But upon opening the box I get the reprieve I needed – its mispacked and has no instructions! WIN!

I gleefully (as my wife described it) bundled the sprues back into the box and grabbed the box of Forge World goodies I got yesterday – time to build something I wanted to, rather than had to.

I present – Mhara Gal!

Mhara Gal 1

Like all the Forge World Character series, he came in a nice black box with a full colour image of him (front and back). A quick inspection of parts showed them all present and accounted for and a very easy assembly ready to go.

Taking the vents off the parts showed just how detailed this model is – its truly awesome up close and I have found new details every time I looked at it. Mould lines were all but non existent with just a couple on one elbow and one hip to clean up. After the scalpel on the vent points and a quick wash in soapy water he was good to go!

The model is far more limited than a standard contemptor dreadnaught in terms of posability – its legs are 2 single solid pieces so you get no real options there while its head only fits one way as well meaning he is always looking to his right. I decided I would swap the arms over so its close combat arm was on the side he was looking and then angled the arms and hips enough that he appeared to be reaching for his next victim – I think I achieved what I was after pretty well!

Mhara Gal 3

The other thing I will say is that this guy is BIG. No really – I suspect he is bigger than a standard contemptor by a solid margin but as I am renovating at home right now – I could only lay my hands on a dark vengeance cultist and a GW possessed marine to do the scale shot.

Mhara Gal 4 inc size comparison

As you can see he towers over even the marine – with the possessed not even hitting the big guys hip height! The cultist is about knee height!

The ease at which this kit went together and the amazing detail he is covered with really made this build a joy to complete and that just highlights how much of a rut I was in thanks to all the terrain building. Sometimes you need to do something you really want to do and get out of the boring routine of ‘work’ for your hobby.

Wouldn’t it be a shame if I could not get instructions for the Bastion and had to build the Gal Vorbak tomorrow!
