Indomitus – An Unboxing

What a box this is. If you have been living under a rock (maybe slumbering like a necron) and play 40k but have not seen this box i dont know what to say. Indomitus is – in this authors opinion – the single greatest value box Games Workshop has ever released. Lets take a look under the hood and see whats in this mammoth box set.

The Books

Yes you get 2 books of note. The first is the Core Rule Book with alternate cover art. 360+ pages, full colour and a mighty heavy tome! About half the book is devoted to the long and detailed lore of the setting with new art scattered through it or old art now colourised for our modern era. It still feels very grim dark for those worried about that. The second half is rules, core rules, missions, terrain and the fabulous crusade system for narrative play (which will get its own article soon!)

The second book – or supplement – covers the new rules for the models contained in the box itself. I had a moment of disappointment when I realised the book didn’t have campaign missions in it and only had power level to boot but its a minor issue. Points are just around the corner and looking at the forces, putting both down opposite each other on a smaller size board would work just fine.

The Models

Where to start? 61 models is nothing short of stellar in terms of value. Don’t let the push-fit nature of them put you off. These models are as detailed as any other kit released in recent years and in general go together quickly and easily – and would do so without glue. They are also the standard plastic of the GW kits – not coloured – which was nice.

The Space Marine half is very much a crusading force, looking very akin to Knights Templar from modern cinema with revised vambraces on sword arms, tabards, heraldic shields and more. The don’t look out of place beside the standard Primaris though – just different enough that they aren’t simply a Primaris with sword and pistol instead of a rifle. Its a distinct feeling while keeping the core style the same.

The Necrons on the other hand look like someone who just got woken up from a coma after some kind of accident and they are not happy! Gone are the smooth armour panels and futuristic robots – replaced with nicks, scratches and broken parts – an ancient evil awoken from the earth. There is so much character in these kits now. The warriors have options for both weapons (Guass Reaper or Flayer) and multiple head options to make every model slightly different – with varying degrees of damage while the characters look regal and powerful with less damage and wear showing. The range as a whole is much more animated as well which helps make them feel more dynamic.

If you play either of these factions its worth you grabbing a box – especially now that Games Workshop has made it available as a Made to Order set for a limited time. You can check out Episode 72 of the podcast to hear us talk more in depth about the amazing models and some of the intricacies of the kits in the build.

Thank you to Games Workshop for supplying us with the advance copy of Indomitus for review.
